Learning objectives:After this lesson, the students will be able to
a) Understand the three growing pains: physical, psychological and social.
b) Develop a better attitude towards the inevitable growing pains.
a) Instruct the students to analyze the structure of the article.
Blackboard, PPT, chalk.
Individual work, pair work, group work.
Play a song “Hero”, with the lyrics on the screen. At the same time, explain some information of the movie to the students.
Step2: Analysis of the article
- Topic part:
Since the title of this essay is “Growing Pains”, we can easily guess the theme or topic of this article is “Growing Pains”. Now you have 3 minutes to read the first and the second paragraph.
Task 1: Translate the second and the third sentences in the first paragraph in groups. One person writes and the other two translate orally. Three persons as a group. Please polish your language to make it sounds beautifully.
Task 2: Finish the three blanks according to para2.
Write down the following things on the blackboard when they are doing the translation:
Time span: between child and adult
Typical feelings: lonely and misunderstood
We can see that the two paragraphs introduce the Topic of this essay to us.
- Supporting details:
We all know when you want others to support your opinions, you have to give some examples to make your opinions more persuasive(说服力). Let’s see the supporting details of the author’s opinions. You have 5 minutes to read the following 3 paragraphs. Filling the blanks on the screen.
T: Growing pains exit every stage of our lives. They accompany us all the way. They are our friends. Let’s see an American boy Mason’s life. We will see at different period of his life, he has different growing pains. The same thing is that these growing pains are always there, accompanying him and so do us.
